What is a carnet of boat?
To navigate through Spanish waters, with pleasure boats you need to have skipper qualification. Depending on the size of the vessel and the distance of the navigation from the coast you can choose between different types of sailing qualifications.
A driving boat it is an official document issued by the competent authority certifying that the holder has complied with the requirements necessary to operate a boat safely and legally. This document may vary in type and name depending on the jurisdiction, but generally involves the demonstration of seamanship skills, knowledge of maritime safety and compliance with specific regulations.
The driving vessel is essential for those who wish to participate in water activities, ensuring a minimum level of competence and to contribute to security in the water. As with the land vehicles, in order to govern a boat is necessary to obtain a permit that proves that you have the knowledge necessary to be able to handle it.
The General Directorate of the Merchant Marine or, in his default, the Autonomous Communities that have taken these competencies (the Canary islands, Catalonia, the Balearic islands, Andalusia, Asturias, Galicia, the Basque Country, Murcia, Cantabria, Valencia, Ceuta, Melilla and the Basque Country) are in charge of issuing these qualifications.
To get them you will have to overcome a few courses, a few theoretical examinations and an internship in boats approved. The Royal Decree 875/2014 regulates the nautical qualifications of recess in Spain, establishing requirements and procedures for obtaining licenses for different categories of boats.
When do I need a carnet of boat or license?
The need of a driving boat or license to operate a vessel depends on several factors, including the jurisdiction, the type of boat and its use. In general terms, then, are some common situations in which we require a membership card or license for the navigation:
- Pleasure boats: In many countries, it requires a title company or a license to operate pleasure craft. The category of the license can vary depending on the size and type of boat.
- Engine power: In some places, the need of a sailing qualification may depend on the power of the engine of the boat. For example, you may be required to obtain a license for boats with engines of a certain power.
- Navigation area: Some licenses may be specific to certain areas of navigation, such as internal waters or the open sea. The complexity and the requirements for the license can vary depending on the area of navigation.
- Kind of activity: If you performed any specific activity on the boat, such as fishing or diving, it is possible that it requires an additional license.
- Age of the operator: for the navigation licence or title GNPS have minimum age requirements for holders.

Types of Driving a Boat and Licenses for Recreational boats
Depending on the type of boat you want to govern, you have to choose to get you a card or other. Here we explain the types of card that exist and how to access them:
Titulín or License of Navigation
It is popularly known as Titulín or License of navigation is the card most basic of all and it is intended for those who want to surf with a small boat or jet of water, without straying too far from the coast. Allows you to:
- Sail boats up to 6 metres in length, and jet skis
- Navigation only daytime
- Minimum age 16 years
- You can zoom out up to 2 miles of the coast.

During the training you will learn basic maneuvers within the port, the checks prior to the departure of the sea and the knots used. You must also know the rights of basic step to avoid collisions, notions of safe navigation and marking of the sea.
Carnet Pattern of Basic Navigation
Would you like to go fishing during the night? The card GNP (Pattern Basic Navigationis your degree. This permission will allow you to navigate up to 5 miles of the coast in motor boats up to 8 metres in length, and without any power limit.
The minimum age to obtain this licence is 16 years and is also enabled for jet skis. In addition, to obtain the title of GNP need to attend a course given by a school or federation official consisting of two-hour lectures and two hours of practice in radio telecommunications. You will have to pass a test type test, perform 8 hours of practice on safety and navigation and pass a medical examination.
Carnet Pattern of Recreational Boat
The license or permit of the PER, it is a driving boat very popular to enhance the powers that gives you the license and able to navigate ships something larger and requires no skipper qualification pre. For this reason, the PER (Skipper of a Recreational Vessel) is the card more and more common.

Carnet Pattern of the Yacht
Do you want to run a yacht? You'll need to get the Driving Pattern of the Yacht, which allows the navigation of vessels up to 24 metres in length and walk away, up to a maximum distance of 150 miles.
The first requirement for obtaining it is to be in possession of the card, PER, of which we have spoken previously. You'll also need to overcome a theoretical test and do some practical tests of navigation in height, consisting of a crossing of 48 hours.
Card of Boat: Yacht Captain
Is the maximum degree in recreational boats. Allows the navigation in any type of boat without limit browsing: browse day and night, at any distance from the coast and with unlimited length.
To get the Card of Captain of the Yacht you will have to have the driving Pattern of the Yacht. You'll also need to do an internship in a vessel approved. Have a duration of 48 hours, of which at least 36 are of the regime of crossing. In addition, you should stay in at least one guard navigation full day and another night.
